N5
う動詞(否定形)
うどうし(ひていけい)
Will/Does/Do (not)
彼女は川で泳ぎません。
She does not swim in rivers.
Explanation
The negative of a godan verb: change the last kana to the あ-row sound of the same row, then add 「ない」: 「書く」 → 「書かない」. The polite form changes it to the い-row and adds 「ません」: 「書きません」. Two special cases: a verb ending in 「う」 changes it to 「わ」, not 「あ」: 「買う」 → 「買わない」; and the negative of 「ある」 is 「ない」, not 「あらない」.
Mixed up with
「う」 becomes 「わ」: 「買う→買わない」, 「歌う→歌わない」.
「つ」 becomes 「た」: 「待つ→待たない」, not 「待つない」.
The negative of 「ある」 is 「ない」, and its polite form is 「ありません」 or 「ないです」.
