~になる・~くなる

To become (Adjective)

勉強べんきょうをしているから、頭あたまが良よくなる。

I study, so I'll get smarter.

Explanation

It means 'become': a state, quality or status changes naturally. An い-adjective drops 「い」 and adds 「くなる」: 「寒くなる」 (get cold); a な-adjective or a noun takes 「に」 and then 「なる」: 「元気になる」 (get well), 「医者になる」 (become a doctor). It stresses the result of the change, not a decision by someone.

Mixed up with

A な-adjective or noun takes 「に」, an い-adjective changes to 「く」; do not mix them up: not 「静かくなる」 or 「寒いになる」.

「いい」 becomes 「よくなる」 (get better), never 「いくなる」.

「〜になる」 is a natural change: 「春になる」 (spring comes); 「〜にする」 is a deliberate change by someone: 「音を小さくする」 (turn the sound down).
