でしょう

Right?, Probably, Isn't it?

イタリアは良よかったでしょう。

Italy was great, wasn't it?

Explanation

「でしょう」 has 2 uses

1Probably

With a falling tone it is a guess: 「明日は雨でしょう」 (It will probably rain tomorrow). Weather forecasts use it a lot.

彼かれも踊おどるでしょう。

He will probably dance too.

今日きょうの昼ひるごはんはハンバーガーでしょう。

Lunch today will probably be hamburgers.

2Right?

With a rising tone you check with the listener: 「田中さんでしょう?」 (You are Mr Tanaka, right?).

これはあなたの本ほんでしょう?

This is your book, right?

イタリアは良よかったでしょう。

Italy was great, wasn't it?

Mixed up with

After a noun or a な-adjective, drop 「だ」: not 「学生だでしょう」 but 「学生でしょう」.

Falling tone = your own guess; rising tone = asking the other person to confirm.

「でしょう」 is polite; the casual form is 「だろう」. To an elder, 「〜でしょうか」 is more polite than a confirming 「でしょう?」.
