N5
たい
Want to do
今夜はピザが食べたい。
Tonight, I want to eat pizza.
Explanation
「〜たい」 means 'want to do', attached to the ます-stem: 「食べたい」 (want to eat), 「日本へ行きたい」 (want to go to Japan). 「たい」 conjugates like an い-adjective: negative 「〜たくない」, past 「〜たかった」, past negative 「〜たくなかった」. In a question, 「〜たいですか」 asks what the other person wants. You cannot use it to state directly what a third person wants.
Mixed up with
Do not state what someone else wants directly: 「田中さんは日本へ行きたいです」 is unnatural; say 「田中さんは日本へ行きたがっています」 (he seems to want to go) or 「行きたいと言っています」 (he says he wants to go).
Do not ask an elder 「お茶を飲みたいですか」; it sounds like probing what they want, which is impolite. Say 「お茶はいかがですか」 or 「お茶を召し上がりますか」.
