か(間接疑問)

か(かんせつぎもん)

Including questions within sentences

僕ぼくがどこにいるかわかる?

Do you know where I am?

Explanation

A question with a question word (だれ, どこ, いつ, 何, どう, なぜ) plus 「か」 can be placed inside a longer sentence as the content of verbs like 'know', 'ask' or 'forget'. The main verb is often 「分かる」, 「知っている」, 「忘れる」, 「調べる」, 「教える」 or 「聞く」: 「彼がどこに住んでいるか知っていますか」 (Do you know where he lives?), 「会議がいつ始まるか教えてください」 (Please tell me when the meeting starts).

Mixed up with

Two kinds of indirect question: with a question word, 「question word+plain form+か」: 「何時に着くか」; without one ('whether'), 「plain form+かどうか」: 「行くかどうか分からない」. With a question word, do not add 「かどうか」; 「×どこに行くかどうか」 is wrong.

Inside the embedded clause the subject usually takes 「が」: 「田中さんがどこにいるか知っていますか」. 「は」 stays when it is the topic of the whole sentence: 「先生はどこに行ったか分かる?」.
