て・で(手段)
て・で(しゅだん)
By, With, On, By means of, ~ing with
寝坊をしたので慌てて準備をした。
Since I overslept, I got ready in a flurry.
Explanation
A verb in the て-form, or a noun plus 「で」, tells how the next action is done:
1Verb て-form for manner: 「歩いて学校へ行く」 (go to school on foot), 「急いで家に帰った」 (hurried home).
2Noun plus 「で」 for a tool, vehicle or language: 「箸で食べる」 (eat with chopsticks), 「バスで行く」 (go by bus), 「日本語で話す」 (speak in Japanese).
The two actions feel like one single event.
Mixed up with
'Go on foot' is 「歩いて行く」, never 「×歩きで行く」. Only nouns such as vehicles take 「で」 directly: 「車で行く」.
An affirmative manner uses 「て」: 「笑って答えた」 (answered with a smile). A negative manner usually uses 「ないで」: 「見ないで言った」 (said it without looking).
