るところだ

About to, On the verge of

彼かれは手紙てがみを書かくところだ。

He is about to write a letter.

Explanation

'dictionary form + ところだ' means an action is just about to start; you are at the moment before it. It often goes with 「今から」 or 「これから」.

「今から食べるところです」 (I'm about to eat).

Mixed up with

Three forms: 「食べるところ」 about to eat; 「食べているところ」 in the middle of eating; 「食べたところ」 just finished eating.

「~るところだった」 means 'almost …', and it did not happen: 「危うく事故になるところだった」 (I almost had an accident).
