ようにいう

To tell, request, or order to do (in such a way)

子供こどもに水みずをこぼさないように言いう。

I tell my child not to spill his water.

Explanation

「〜ように言う」 reports someone's instruction, request or advice: 「先生は学生に静かにするように言った」 (The teacher told the students to be quiet). 「言う」 can be swapped for 「頼む」, 「お願いする」, 「注意する」, 「伝える」 or 「命じる」. It is gentler than saying 'ordered'. When you are the one being told, use the passive: 「〜ように言われる」, 「〜ように頼まれる」.

Mixed up with

The passive is very common, especially in listening: 「母に部屋を掃除するように言われた」 (My mother told me to clean my room).

To tell someone not to do something, put the negative before 「ように」: 「〜ないように言う」, never 「×〜ように言わない」.

When reporting to a boss or client use honorifics, e.g. 「〜ようお願い申し上げました」.
