てよかった

I'm glad that

やっぱり今日きょう来きてよかったね。

I'm glad we came today after all.

Explanation

「〜てよかった」 says you are glad or relieved about something that happened: 「傘を持ってきてよかった」 (Good thing I brought an umbrella), 「お元気になってよかったです」 (I'm glad you got better). For something that did not happen use 「〜なくてよかった」, or in speech 「〜ないでよかった」: 「雨が降らなくてよかった」 (I'm glad it didn't rain).

Mixed up with

「〜てよかった」 is relief about what happened. 「〜ばよかった」 and 「〜たらよかった」 are regret: 「行けばよかった」 (I should have gone). Exams like to mix these two.

To an elder or a client, a bare 「よかったですね」 can sound patronizing. A better line is 「安心いたしました」.

Examples

I'm glad that I didn't buy that cellphone.

  2. このレストランにまた来きてよかった。

I'm glad that we came to this restaurant again.

  3. ダイエットを諦あきらめなくてよかった。

I'm glad that I didn't give up on my diet.
