Won't you?, Will you?, Could you?, Can you?, Would you?

Could you lend me your bike, just for today?

Explanation

「〜てくれない?」 and 「〜てもらえない?」 make a request as a negative question, which is softer than a plain 「〜て」: 「ちょっと手伝ってくれない?」 (Could you help me a bit?). The negative question leaves the other person room to say no. 「〜てもらえない?」 is more polite than 「〜てくれない?」. To an elder use 「〜ていただけませんか」 or 「〜てくださいませんか」.

Mixed up with

From casual to most polite: 「〜

A negative question is more polite than a positive one because it makes it easier to say no.

To ask someone not to do something: 「〜
