ございます

To be, To exist (Polite)

Thank you very much.

Explanation

「ございます」 is the very polite form of 「あります」, showing great courtesy to the listener. It is used for things that exist or that someone has, and is common in service, at reception desks and in business writing: 「あちらにエレベーターがございます」 (There is an elevator over there), 「何かご質問はございますか」 (Do you have any questions?).

Mixed up with

「ございます」 means 'there is'. 「でございます」 is the very polite 「です」 and means 'is': 「ペンがございます」 (I have a pen), 「こちらは私のペンでございます」 (This is my pen).

The negative is 「ございません」, and the past negative is 「ございませんでした」.

Examples

    Do you have any questions?

    I am the representative.

    Good morning.
