N4
がほしい
To want something, To be in need of
新しい車が欲しいけど、今はお金が無いから買えない。
I want a new car, but I don't have any money right now, so I can't buy one.
Explanation
'noun + がほしい' means 'I want something'. The thing wanted takes 「が」.
「新しい車がほしい」 (I want a new car). 「ほしい」 is an i-adjective: 「ほしくない」, 「ほしかった」, 「ほしくなかった」.
It is for yourself, or for asking the other person.
Mixed up with
「がほしい」 is wanting a thing; 「たい」 is wanting to do something: wanting to buy a car is 「車を買いたい」, wanting a car is 「車がほしい」.
For someone else, not 「×彼は車がほしい」 but 「彼は車をほしがっている」, and 「が」 becomes 「を」.
Do not ask an elder or guest 「~がほしいですか」; it sounds blunt. Use something like 「~はいかがですか」.
