N4
かた
Way of ~ing, How to ~, Manner of ~ing
何その食べ方、口を閉じてよ。
What is that way of eating? Please close your mouth.
Explanation
「〜かた」 (方) attaches to the ます-stem of a verb and makes a noun meaning the way or steps of doing something: 「使い方」 (how to use), 「食べ方」 (how to eat), 「読み方」 (how to read), 「作り方」 (how to make).
Mixed up with
The particle changes: the 「を」 the verb took becomes 「の」 once it is a way of doing: 「漢字を書く」 → 「漢字の書き方」, not 「漢字を書き方」 or 「漢字を書く方」.
自転車を直す → 自転車の直しかた (how to repair a bicycle)
日本語を勉強する → 日本語の勉強のしかた (how to study Japanese)
With 「する」 verbs you cannot drop 「の」: not 「勉強しかた」 but 「勉強の仕方」.
「かた」 also means 'that person' (あの方); the context tells you which.
