～かというと ②

This is the other use of 「かというと」. It often goes with a question word (「どちら」, 「どこ」, 「いつ」, 「誰」, 「何」), and the most common form is 「どちらかというと / どちらかといえば」, 'if I had to choose'. When a matter is not black and white and you don't want to rule too firmly, you ask yourself first as a cushion, then softly say which side you lean toward: 「私はどちらかというと、犬より猫のほうが好きだ」 (If I had to say, I like cats more than dogs).

•「どちらかというと」 is very common in listening and grammar questions, meaning 'if you made me choose, I lean toward...'. It is often followed by 「～のほうが」 or 「～かな」.

•「かというと」 (1) is about a reason ('why... because...'). 「かというと」 (2) is about choice or leaning ('if I had to say, I'd rather...').
