もっとも

Although, Though, That said

私わたしの妹いもうとはピアノを弾ひくのがじょうずだ。もっとも、弾ひけるのは一曲いっきょくだけだ。

My sister is good at playing the piano. Although, she can only play one song.

Explanation

「もっとも」 at the start of a sentence is a connector meaning 'though' or 'that said'. After a mostly positive statement, you immediately add an exception, limit or reservation, so the listener does not misunderstand or expect too much: 「この店は安くておいしい。もっとも、日曜日は休みだが」 (This shop is cheap and tasty. Though it's closed on Sundays).

Mixed up with

Keep three 「もっとも」 apart: 「最も」 is an adverb, 'most' (「最も美しい」); 「尤も」 is a na-adjective, 'reasonable' (「ごもっともです」); this one is a connector at the start of the second sentence, adding a limit ('though').

「ただし」 is an added condition in rules and regulations, more formal. 「もっとも」 is a thought the speaker adds on the spot, common in speech and writing.

Examples

  1. 俺おれはすき焼やきが大好だいすきだ。もっとも、毎日まいにち食たべられるわけではない。

I love sukiyaki. That said, it's not like I can eat it every day.

  2. 私わたしは韓国かんこくについてものすごく詳くわしいです。もっとも、韓国かんこくには行いったことがないけど。

I am very knowledgeable about Korea, although I have never been there.

  3. 日本語にほんごを話はなせます。もっとも、少すこしだけですが。

I can speak Japanese. But only a bit.
