たびに

Each time, Every time, Whenever

タナカ君くんと飲のみに行いくたびに、二日ふつか酔よいになる。

Every time I go out to drink with Tanaka-kun, I get a hangover.

Explanation

「〜たびに」 means 'every time ...'. Whenever the first thing happens, the second always follows, often a feeling or a habit: 「この歌を聞くたびに、高校時代を思い出す」 (Every time I hear this song, I remember high school). Attaches to noun + の or a dictionary-form verb.

Mixed up with

「〜たびに」: usually a personal feeling or a fixed habit (cry every time I see the photo).

「〜ごとに」: objective repetition with no exceptions (every Sunday).

「〜につけて」: more about feelings stirred inside (見るにつけ、聞くにつけ).

Form trap: the verb takes the dictionary form. You cannot say 「会ったたびに」; say 「会うたびに」.

  3. 君きみは会あう度たびに大人おとなになってゆく。
