N3
こそ
Precisely; this one and no other; this time for sure
今度こそ勝つぞ!
I will win for sure next time!
Explanation
「こそ」 picks out one thing and stresses 'this is the one': 「今度こそ合格してみせる」 (This time I will pass for sure), 「彼こそ真の友人だ」 (He is the true friend). The everyday phrase 「こちらこそ」 ('the pleasure is mine') uses it to return thanks or an apology: 「『お世話になりました』『いいえ、こちらこそ』」.
Mixed up with
After a noun, drop 「が」 and 「を」 and add 「こそ」 directly: 「本を読んだ」 becomes 「本こそ読んだ」.
Other particles such as 「に」, 「で」, 「から」 stay, with 「こそ」 after them: 「ここにこそ」, 「ここでこそ」.
Related patterns: 「~からこそ」 (precisely because...), 「~てこそ」 (only by doing... can you truly...).
