N2
ぬ
Classical negative, Classical verb [ない]
こんなに狭い道は通れぬ。
I cannot pass a road this narrow.
Explanation
「ぬ」 has 2 uses
1Set phrases before nouns
In modern writing ぬ survives in set phrases before nouns and in proverbs: 「思わぬ事態」, 「予期せぬトラブル」, 「見知らぬ人」, 「言わぬが花」.
「隅に置けぬ人」というのは「侮れない人」ということなのだ。
'A person you can't leave in a corner' means 'a person who cannot be taken lightly'.
上司は部下が向上できるように、至らぬ点を教えてあげるべきだ。
A superior should tell his/her subordinates where they fall short so that they can improve.
2Old-style negative at the end
At the end of a sentence (or before のだ, ぞ) it is old-fashioned role language for samurai, old men or villains in stories: 「ここにはおらぬ」, 「殺せぬ」. Not used in everyday speech.
「愚か者、男には殺せぬのだ。」
'Fool, no man can kill me.'
こんなに狭い道は通れぬ。
I cannot pass a road this narrow.
