たって

Even if, Even though, No matter how

どんなに欲ほしくたって、万引まんびきをしてはいけない。

No matter how much you want something, you must not shoplift.

Explanation

「たって」 is the spoken form of 「ても/でも」, meaning 'even if'. Even if the first part is true, the result, the resolve or the helpless state that follows will not change: 「今さら後悔したって、もう遅い」 (Regretting it now is too late). Changes: 「行っても」 becomes 「行ったって」, 「高くても」 becomes 「高くたって」, 「子供でも」 becomes 「子供だって」. The tone is blunt and casual, a bit stubborn.

Mixed up with

「たって」: talk between friends; never use it in formal papers or business e-mails.

「ても」: the standard form, fine in speech and writing.

「とも」: literary and old-fashioned; tone of an oath or philosophy.
