I was late because there was an accident involving several cars on the highway.

Explanation

「〜次第です」 goes at the end of a sentence and means 'that is how things came about'. It is a formal way to give the reason or background, typical in business letters, reports to superiors and explanations to clients: 「ご連絡を差し上げた次第です」 (This is why I am contacting you), 「お願い申し上げる次第です」 (I am therefore asking you), 「伺った次第です」 (This is why I came to visit). It often follows a past-tense verb about your own action.

Noun＋次第だ: 「成功するかは努力次第だ」 (Success depends on effort).
