N5
う動詞(過去形)
うどうし(かこけい)
う - Verbs (Past tense)
昨日、本を読んだ。
I read a book yesterday.
Explanation
The past (た-form) of a godan verb changes the sound of the ending, exactly as the て-form does:
1Verbs ending in 「う・つ・る」 become 「った」: 買う → 買った
2「く」 becomes 「いた」 and 「ぐ」 becomes 「いだ」: 書く → 書いた, 泳ぐ → 泳いだ
3「ぬ・ぶ・む」 become 「んだ」: 死ぬ → 死んだ, 遊ぶ → 遊んだ, 飲む → 飲んだ
4「す」 becomes 「した」: 話す → 話した
The polite form changes the ending to the い-row and adds 「ました」: 書きました.
Mixed up with
Exception: 「行く」 is not 「行いた」; it is 「行った」.
When the ending is voiced (ぐ, ぶ, ぬ, む), the 「た」 becomes 「だ」: 泳いだ, 遊んだ.
Rule of thumb: う・つ・る → 「った」; く → 「いた」, ぐ → 「いだ」; ぬ・ぶ・む → 「んだ」; す → 「した」.
