N5
る動詞(辞書形)
るどうし(じしょけい)
Ichidan (る) verbs: dictionary form
生徒が答える。
The student answers.
Explanation
The dictionary form of an ichidan verb always ends in 「る」, and the kana before 「る」 has an i or e sound (the い-row or え-row), such as 「見る」, 「起きる」, 「食べる」, 「寝る」. Conjugation is easy: drop 「る」 and attach the rest: 「食べる」 → 「食べます」, 「食べない」.
Mixed up with
Some verbs look ichidan but are really godan (a favourite exam trap): 帰る, 入る, 走る, 切る, 知る. Their polite forms are 「帰ります」, 「入ります」, 「走ります」, 「切ります」, 「知ります」, not 「帰ます」.
