N5
誰
だれ
Who
これは誰のノートですか。
Whose notebook is this?
Explanation
「誰」 means 'who' and asks who someone is: 「誰ですか」. Particles follow it: 「誰が」 (who, as subject), 「誰の」 (whose), 「誰も+negative」 (nobody): 「誰もいない」. The politer words are 「どなた」 and 「どちら様」.
Mixed up with
A question word as the subject takes only 「が」, never 「は」: 「誰が来ますか」, not 「誰は来ますか」. The answer takes 「が」 too: 「田中さんが来ます」.
Asking an elder, a guest or a client who they are with just 「誰ですか」 is rude; say 「どなたですか」 or 「どちら様ですか」.
