N5
より~のほうが
To be more ~ than ~
田舎に住むより、都会の方がいい。
Living in the city is better than living in the countryside.
Explanation
It compares two things and says one is more …: 「バスより電車のほうが速い」 (The train is faster than the bus). 「より」 follows the thing you compare against, and 「ほう」 follows the side that has more of it, with 「が」 after. The order can be reversed: 「電車のほうがバスより速い」.
Mixed up with
Comparing two uses 「どちらが」, and the answer is 「〜のほうが」, never 「一番」; for three or more use 「の中で」, and the answer cannot be 「〜のほうが」.
A noun before 「ほう」 takes 「の」: 「私のほう」, 「バスのほう」; verbs and adjectives connect directly: 「食べるほうがいい」.
Do not swap them: 「より」 goes with the thing compared against, 「ほう」 with the one that comes out ahead.
