N5
なくてはいけない
Must do, Have to do
今日は9時に寝なくてはいけない。
Today I have to go to bed at 9.
Explanation
「〜なくてはいけない」 means 'must …', literally 'it won't do if you don't': 「薬を飲まなくてはいけません」 (You must take your medicine). Form: take the ない-form, drop 「い」, add 「くて」, then 「はいけない」. In speech it is often 「〜なくちゃいけない」: 「行かなくちゃいけない」.
Mixed up with
「〜なくてはいけない」 is mostly everyday speech, for common sense, social rules or what you ask of someone; 「〜なくてはならない」 is more written, for objective rules, legal duties and solemn occasions.
What comes before is always 「なくて」: 「書かなくては」, not 「書かないては」.
In speech people often say only the first half: 「もう行かなくちゃ」 (I have to go now).
