てください

Please do (Polite request)

手てを洗あらってください。

Please wash your hands.

Explanation

「〜てください」 is the most basic polite request, attached to the て-form: 'please …': 「名前を書いてください」 (Please write your name), 「お茶を飲んでください」 (Please have some tea). It is also used in instructions and explanations to tell someone what to do.

Mixed up with

Do not use a bare 「〜てください」 with a boss, an elder or a client; it sounds a little like giving orders: saying 「名前を書いてください」 to a client is not quite right. Use 「〜てくださいませんか」, 「〜ていただけますでしょうか」 or 「お〜ください」.

Among friends and family 「ください」 is often dropped: 「ちょっと待って」 (Wait a moment).

Examples

  2. このえんぴつを使つかってください。

  3. この本ほんを読よんでください。

    Please read this book.
