Explanation
「〜ている」 says an action is in progress: 「勉強している」 (I'm studying). Form: て-form of the verb + いる; polite 「〜ています」. For something that was in progress in the past, 「〜ていた」 or 「〜ていました」. In speech the 「い」 is often dropped: 「〜てる」, 「〜てます」.
Mixed up with
Verbs fall roughly into three kinds:
Continuing actions (食べる, 書く, 飲む): with 「ている」 they mean 'is doing'.
Instant actions (結婚する, 死ぬ, 知る, 着る): with 「ている」 they do not mean 'is doing' but the state that remains afterwards; for example 「結婚している」 means 'is married' (you will meet this later).
State verbs (ある, いる, 要る, できる): already a state, so they never take 「ている」; there is no 「あっている」.
