N5
あの
That (over there)
あの子は可愛いね。
That girl is cute, isn't she?
Explanation
「あの」 means 'that … (over there)' and goes before a noun. It points to a person or thing far from both speaker and listener: 「あの山」. It also points to people and things you both know and remember: 「あの先生、覚えてる?」 (Do you remember that teacher?).
Mixed up with
この: the speaker's own matter, or something close to the speaker.
その: something the other person mentioned.
あの: something you both know.
Note that 「あの」 or 「あのう」 is also a hesitation word before you speak, like 'Um, excuse me …'.
