だが・ですが
But, Still, However, Nevertheless
彼は弁護士だ。だが、頭はあまり良くない。不思議だ。
He is a lawyer. But he isn't very smart. How odd.
Explanation
「だが」 and 「ですが」 go at the start of a sentence and mean 'but': you say one thing and then its opposite. 「だが」 is plain style, used in writing, serious reports and men's casual monologue; 「ですが」 is polite style, used in formal speech.
「一生懸命勉強した。だが、不合格だった」 (I studied hard. But I failed.) 「申し訳ありませんが、満席です。ですが、別室ならご案内できます」 (I'm very sorry, we're full. However, I can show you to a private room.)
Mixed up with
Words for 'but' compared:
「だが」: written, objective, forceful (papers, news).
「ですが」: polite, at the start of a sentence, softer than 「しかし」.
「しかし」: the most formal and solemn, a must in writing and speeches.
「でも」: purely spoken and casual; not for serious official documents.
Note: the particle 「が」 can join two clauses within a sentence (「〜ましたが、〜」), whereas 「だが」 and 「ですが」 normally stand at the start of a sentence and do not follow an adjective or verb.
