く・に

~ly (Describing verbs), Adverbs

彼かれは彼女かのじょに甘あまく話はなしかけた。

He spoke to her sweetly.

Explanation

An adjective placed before a verb tells how the action is done, and it changes form.

i-adjectives: 「い」 becomes 「く」: 「早く起きる」 (get up early), 「安く買う」 (buy cheaply).

na-adjectives: add 「に」: 「静かに歩く」 (walk quietly), 「綺麗に片付ける」 (tidy up neatly).

「いい」 becomes 「よく」.

Mixed up with

Modifying a noun and modifying a verb use different forms. Before a noun: i-adjectives keep 「い」 (高い山), na-adjectives take 「な」 (静かな部屋). Before a verb: 「高く跳ぶ」, 「静かにする」.

The same forms are used before 「なる」 and 「する」: 「~くなる」, 「~くする」, 「~になる」, 「~にする」.
