かどうか

Whether or not, If...or not

水みずが汚きたないからこの川かわが深ふかいかどうか分わからない。

Since the water is dirty, I don't know whether or not this river is deep.

Explanation

「〜かどうか」 means 'whether or not'. It puts a yes/no question inside a sentence, and the main verb is often 「分からない」, 「調べる」, 「聞く」 or 「決める」: 「明日雨が降るかどうか分からない」 (I don't know whether it will rain tomorrow), 「本当かどうか確かめてください」 (Please check whether it is true).

Mixed up with

After a な-adjective or a noun, do not keep 「だ」: 「元気かどうか」, 「先生かどうか」, not 「×元気だかどうか」.

If the clause has a question word (何, どこ, だれ), use only 「〜か」: 「誰が来るか分からない」. Without a question word use 「〜かどうか」: 「来るかどうか分からない」.
