N4
いがい
Except・besides, Other than, With the exception of
今日は和食以外のものが食べたい。
Today I want to eat something other than Japanese food.
Explanation
「以外」, read 「いがい」, follows a noun or a plain-form verb and means 'other than'. It sets one item aside and talks about the rest.
It often goes with a negative: 「田中さん以外、だれも来なかった」 (Nobody came except Mr. Tanaka).
Mixed up with
「以外」 subtracts: apart from A, the rest is so. 「のほかに(も)」 adds: besides A, there is also B: 「英語のほかに日本語も話せる」 (Besides English, I can speak Japanese).
Do not say 「×英語以外の日本語も話せる」.
Before a verb, use the plain form: 「寝る以外」.
