N4
あまり~ない
Not very, Not much, Not really, Hardly
今の時間だったらあまり並ばないと思うよ。
At this time, I think we would not have to stand in line for very long.
Explanation
「あまり」 goes with a negative and means 'not very'. In speech it is also 「あんまり」.
「あまり好きではない」 (I don't like it very much); 「あまりおいしくない」 (It isn't very tasty).
Japanese avoids saying 「嫌い」 or 「まずい」 outright, so 「あまり~ない」 is the gentle way to say it.
Mixed up with
「あまり寒くない」 means 'not very cold' (a little chilly); 「ぜんぜん寒くない」 means 'not cold at all'.
「あまり」 with a positive is a higher-level use meaning 'too much': 「あまりの驚きに声も出なかった」 (I was so surprised I couldn't make a sound). N4 tests the negative use; do not mix them up.
