「か」 has 2 uses
At the end of a sentence it makes a question: 「これはペンですか」 (Is this a pen?).
これは本ですか。

Between two nouns it means "or": 「リンゴかみかん」 (an apple or a mandarin).
毎朝、パンかご飯を食べます。

With friends, adding 「か」 straight after a plain-style sentence (like 「だめだか？」) sounds blunt, almost like cross-examining. Friends usually drop 「か」 and just raise the voice: 「大丈夫？」
A bare 「〜か」 at the end is often talking to yourself (「そうか」, I see) or a boss grilling a junior. To ask a peer, use rising intonation or 「〜の？」.
