N5
する
To do, To make into
洗濯をする。
To do laundry.
Explanation
「する」 means 'to do', one of the most common verbs in Japanese. It can stand alone: 「仕事をする」 (to work); or follow a noun and turn it into a verb: 「勉強する」, 「運動する」, 「ドライブする」. The polite form is 「します」.
Mixed up with
It conjugates irregularly: the negative is 「しない」 and the past is 「した」, not 「すらない」 or 「すった」.
Almost any noun that names an action becomes a verb with 「する」: 「コピーする」, 「電話する」.
Later you will meet 「〜がする」 for sensing something (「いい匂いがする」, 「音がする」) and 「〜にする」 for choosing (「コーヒーにする」).
