N5
い形容詞
いけいようし
Adjectives ending in い
山田さんの犬は大きい。
Mr. Yamada's dog is big.
Explanation
An い-adjective is an adjective ending in 「い」, such as 「大きい」, 「おいしい」, 「速い」. It can be the predicate of a sentence by itself (「高い」 means 'is expensive'). Before a noun it goes directly in front. Conjugation: negative 「〜くない」, past 「〜かった」, past negative 「〜くなかった」, adverb 「〜く」. Add 「です」 to be polite, never 「だ」.
Mixed up with
Some words look like い-adjectives but are really な-adjectives, for example 「きれい」 and 「嫌い」. They need 「な」 before a noun: 「きれいな部屋」.
Never add 「だ」 after an い-adjective: 「高いだ」 and 「寒いだ」 are wrong.
